Fortafix Ceramix U529 - High Temperature Strain Gauge Cement

Description.

Fortafix Ceramix U529 is the replacement product for Brimor U529. It is a smooth yellow paste, has a high bond strength, and produces a very hard and tenacious cement when finally cured.

Purpose and Application.

Fortafix Ceramix U529 is particularly suited to use on heat resistant steels and 'Nimonic' alloys, and when applied to these materials has an operating range up to temperatures of 750°C. It can however, be applied with equal facility to the low alloy steels, cast iron, and also to some non-ferrous metals such as brass, titanium, copper and aluminium alloys. In these cases the bond is not so effective as on to steel, due to the effects on cement/metal bonding or surface oxidation of the metal at elevated temperatures.

U529 is used in practice where a high degree of cement/metal adhesion is required - such as would be encountered where gauges are attached to gas turbine rotor components revolving at high speed and are subject to the effects of centrifugal load, gas erosion, and temperatures greater than 700°C.

Typically Used For

For attatching strain gauge devices on to heat resistant steels and 'Nimonic' alloys.

The measurements were made on a built-up wire strain gauge after running in at the top operational temperature. The resistance is low after initial baking on, but rises progressively with continued heating to the figure quoted.

Samples of size 0.25" square x 2" long (6.35mm 2 x 50.79mm). U529 exhibits quartz transformation at about 600°C, after which expansion is much less which accounts for the drop in the figures given for the last mean value over the range 20 - 800°C.
